Pain Management

Pain management at Broadway Chiropractic and Wellness means a plan that combines nondrug care at one address: chiropractic care, acupuncture and massage therapy, with physical therapy in the same building. It's for people with back, neck or joint pain, including pain that has lasted a while. MedlinePlus defines chronic pain as pain that lasts longer than three months, and notes that care may not make it go away but can help with symptoms.

Who you'll see

What a visit involves

  1. History. We ask when it started, where you feel it, what makes it better or worse, and about your health history and medications.
  2. Exam. Dr. Klein checks posture, movement and the area involved. X-rays are taken only if they're needed.
  3. Plan. He explains what he found and what he suggests. You decide how to proceed. If something points to a problem that needs a physician, we'll tell you and suggest you see one.

Conditions commonly seen

What the research says

NCCIH, part of the NIH, lists spinal manipulation, acupuncture and massage among nondrug approaches studied for low-back pain. It reports that spinal manipulation may lead to small improvements in pain and function, that acupuncture may help with back, neck and knee pain from osteoarthritis, and that the evidence for massage in low-back pain is weak.

When to get medical care first

MedlinePlus advises contacting a provider right away for back pain after a severe blow or fall, with unexplained fever, with a history of cancer, with loss of bladder or bowel control, or with weakness or numbness in the buttocks, thigh, leg or pelvis. For a fever and headache with a neck so stiff you can't touch your chin to your chest, or signs of a heart attack, seek help right away or call 911.
