Neck and Back Pain
According to Mayo Clinic, low back pain, neck pain and headaches are the most common reasons people seek chiropractic adjustments. MedlinePlus notes that a common cause of neck pain is muscle strain or tension from everyday things, like bending over a desk for an hour or more, a screen set too high or too low, or sleeping in an awkward position. Low back pain has many causes, and a few of them need a physician. At Broadway Chiropractic and Wellness, at 1410 Broadway in Midtown Manhattan, we start with an evaluation to find where your pain is coming from.
Common signs
- Stiffness, or trouble bending or turning
- Pain that feels sharp, dull, aching or throbbing
- Pain, tingling or weakness that spreads into an arm or leg (see pinched nerve and sciatica)
Who you'll see
Your chiropractic evaluation is with Dr. Jeffrey Klein, DC, who has led the practice since 1998 and holds New York State chiropractic license 008414. Acupuncture with Yong Shuang (Sandy) Cai, an acupuncturist, and massage with Susan Dutan, LMT, can also be part of a plan. Physical therapy at 1410 Broadway is provided by Core One Physical Therapy, brought to you by Broadway Chiropractic and Wellness.
What a visit involves
- History. We ask when it started, where you feel it, what makes it better or worse, and about your health history and medications.
- Exam. Dr. Klein checks posture, movement and the area involved. X-rays are taken only if they're needed.
- Plan. He explains what he found and what he suggests. You decide how to proceed. If something points to a problem that needs a physician, we'll tell you and suggest you see one.
NCCIH lists spinal manipulation among the nondrug approaches studied for low-back pain and notes it may lead to small improvements in pain and function.
Mayo Clinic advises against a chiropractic adjustment if you have numbness, tingling or loss of strength in an arm or leg. Tell us about any of these signs before your visit.

When to get medical care first
Neck pain. MedlinePlus says to call 911 or go to the hospital for a fever and headache with a neck so stiff you can't touch your chin to your chest. Call 911 for heart attack signs such as shortness of breath, sweating, nausea, vomiting, or arm or jaw pain, and don't drive yourself. Call 911 if you can't move your arm or hand after a fall or blow.
Back pain. MedlinePlus says to contact a provider right away for signs that include back pain after a severe blow or fall, unexplained fever with back pain, a history of cancer, loss of bladder or bowel control, or weakness or numbness in the buttocks, thigh, leg or pelvis.
Also contact a provider if back pain lasts longer than 4 weeks, or if it feels different and worse than past episodes.

FAQs
Should I see a chiropractor or a physical therapist?
Chiropractic care focuses on the spine and joints, including adjustments. Physical therapy focuses on exercise and movement. If you're not sure, call (212) 354-2225 and we'll talk it through.
Are there side effects from adjustments?
NCCIH says mild-to-moderate soreness, stiffness or a headache often happens afterward, and most go away within 24 hours. Serious side effects, such as strokes involving arteries in the neck, are very rare.
Is desk work part of the problem?
It can be. MedlinePlus lists long periods bent over a desk and a poorly placed monitor as common causes of neck strain. Ask us about your setup.
